Keynote Speakers
        Prof. Dr. M. Ilhan Cagirgan
Born in 1961, he obtained a B.Sc. in Agronomy in 1983, a M.Sc. in 1985 and a Ph.D. in 1989 in Plant Mutation Breeding from the Aegean University, Izmir, Turkey. He worked as a Research Assistant from 1984 to 1989 at the Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Cumhuriyet University, Turkey. In 1989 he took an Assistant Professorship position at Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1991 and to full Professor in 1997. During 1994-1997 he was appointed as Vice- and Chairperson of the Department of Field Crops at this University. He gained research experience regarding plant mutagenesis in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Labs in 1988 and granted with the IAEA fellowships twice, and his entire career has been built on mutation techniques for 30 years, which yielded many useful mutants of barley, chickpea and sesame for practical breeding purposes and basic studies. He initiated on-farm testing and farmer participatory plant breeding as a self-sufficiency approach in his region and networked international research efforts to such an end by sharing his mutant germplasm globally. He has also completed four different IAEA Coordinated Research Projects, hosted IAEA Fellowships and Scientific Visits and gone Expert Missions. He has communicated more than 100 research outputs regarding plant mutagenesis in refereed journals or at International Meetings. Drought tolerant barley, cold tolerant chickpea and non-shattering sesame are the keywords to his breeding programs where mutation techniques have been used successfully for food security. Furthermore, among many other mass-media releases to public attention, one of his IAEA CRP work was presented on CNN as a good example of using nuclear techniques for peaceful purposes and of his efficiency in disseminating information regarding success of IAEA supported projects by different tools.
